Judy's Writing Goals for September

This post is much more for myself, than others. I figure if I put my goals out there, I will be accountable to them.

So here we go:

1. Have one article bypass my August successful article in page views: "BB8 Game's Integrity in Jeopardy" http://www.writernia.com/node/1012
This article currently has 1085 page views.

I think I can achieve this goal, and my September article: "BB8 - Fast Forward Aftermath"
http://www.writernia.com/node/1161
is catching up quick with 710 page views.

2. Finish the articles I've committed to writing for the event I am coordinating.

3. Have 100 unique visitors on my new online blog: "Lovelace Way" www.lovelaceway.blogspot.com

I know that's not much, but you have to start somewhere.

4. Have 50 unique visitors on my new online puzzle site: "Illogical Pursuits" www.illogicalpursuits.blogspot.com

What Makes a Blog Successful?

stephanie's picture

This is in response to the comment about the vitriolic blog that supposedly gets 100,000 visitors.

Do you ever wonder why some blogs hit it big and others don't? Is it just a case of a blog being better? Or is there a bit of fate and Internet whim involved?

E.g., maybe you are minding your own business and one day, someone with a lot of traffic links to your website. Boom! You get a lot of hits, and then more hits, and then voila, you have a big website.

Meanwhile, I am going to try some of Julie's tips in promoting my new yoga blog, namely, going and posting on other blogs where my URL is linked.

We'll see if that helps!

Turning Readers Away With A Poor Turn of Phrase

Julie_Baumler's picture

We recently had some good discussion here about the fact that irregular blog posting doesn't seem to be the reader turn off that many assume it to be or promote it as. I hope that we can follow this with some discussion of what does turn readers away. For me, it is usually the writing. I don't just mean bad writing, but writing that in some way makes me feel unwelcome or unwanted.

Created My Blog Site!

Yay! I created my blog site. Thanks to Bedarkened for letting me know this place existed! Thanks to Julie for posting that awesome article about blogging (unions)!

I still am waiting for the picture I want for my header.

But if you want a quick see..

Question for Writernia Readers: What makes you click a headline?

When you are perusing the headlines here and elsewhere, what makes you click the headline to read the article? I'm trying to make my headlines more focused and engaging, and was wondering if Writernia readers know what it is that causes them to go to certain articles over others.

For example, This week Judith Blakley's Big Brother 8 Game's Integrity In Jeopardy has skyrocketed in days. And I have to say, I read it too (nice work, Judith). But why are we all drawn to that headline? What makes us want to read that story, myself included?

Judith - How do you do it? You are consistently one of the most read writers here - What is your method for writing headlines that get readers to engage? Or is it simply that you are writing about things that people want to know about, and if so, how do you pick those subjects?

Also, looking for constructive criticism here:

A DANGEROUS MIND: Intellectual Property

AryeDirect's picture

I've got the only deed on my intellect. And I'm not letting in any squatters.

Who'd want to buy a used mind anyway?

... How much do you say you have to spend?

The agentless, Arye Michael Bender

A Dangerous Mind: RAVAGE ALL VIRGINS NOW!!!

Now, I don't mean it.

I don't even like virgins. Let alone want to ravage them.

Nothing against virgins, you understand. After all, I love the Virgin Mary. And my dog, Tina-the-Beast is a virgin (though not by choice, but neither was the Virgin Mary).

Give me an experienced woman, anytime. Let us ravage one another, consensually and not for money. Much more fun.

Meanwhile, back to the headline:

The reason I posted that screaming boldface, RAVAGE ALL VIRGINS!!! above my MySpace blog was as a test. Just to see if anyone breathing is out there who doesn't want 'to meet cool, new people'.

You see, my inflammatory political posts, as well as the ones with masterful irony and humor, and the deeply spiritual ones... Well, they are all going unnoticed.

So let's see if something sexually outrageous gets attention.

But if I get more fake, cyber-bimbos, peddling the promise of S-E-X, they need not bother.

A Bloggers Union? Lucy...D'you got some 'splainin' to do?

"Think warm and breathable, stylish, but soft to the touch. As a future member of the Bloggers Union, I'd like to propose a Strike. Here's my poster (see picture), which I have already made in Photoshop. What do you think, our fearless labor leaders?"

I like to think that I have some idea of what's going on in the land of free speech and the Internet. I pay attention to both the right and the left in the media (though I still can't bring myself to smoke the smack that Bill O'Reilly is cookin', but I do peruse Fox News online even if only for the entertainment), I am in favor of Net Neutrality, and maybe most importantly, I exercise this right by regularly writing and publishing my opinions.

But this one has got me boggled. Or should I say, Bloggled... (Is that trademarked?)

Possibly the Best "I'm Going On Vacation" Blog Message Ever

Julie_Baumler's picture

Lindsay Marshall, over at Bifurcated Rivets posted what is quite possibly the best "I'm Going On Vacation" blog message ever - Shhhhhhhhhh

This is the first blog I read BTW - I've been reading it on and off since close to the beginning. (I find that it's more fun to read a bunch of it in one swoop than keep up with it throughout the day.)
