An observation I have from applying to a few online writing jobs recently: Some editors don't want to do their job. They give you vague directions on what to provide them, and then rather than working with you to give them what they want, they just shoot you down if you didn't read their minds.
I know I can put half a sentence together. I also know that I do better with a good editor. But lately, I find that a lot of editors don't want to nurture the writer. They don't know how to say to a writer, "Could you tighten this up here a little bit?"
Instead, they just expect you to plop out picture perfect writing right out of the box. If you don't perform exactly on cue, they'll continue to search for those few mythological writers who apparently separated from the editor at birth and can thus read the editor's mind.
I wonder if this has to do with the lowering of journalistic standards since the rise of the Internet. I wonder if this is due to many "editors" really not being real writers or editors at all, but being more "community managers." Or, perhaps they founded and run the website and didn't want to pay for a real editor.
What can you do with these folks? In the case of one website, which had tons of writer openings available and had sent me a ridiculous note that my writing sample was "not what they were looking for," I wrote and asked them, "Well what exactly is it that you are looking for? I am capable of doing what you want, if you give me some direction."
I doubt that my blunt question will appeal to the lazy editor who simply wants to find someone who magically gives them what they wanted to see on the first try. But I felt it was worth saying. There they are, with a large number of openings, actively pushing away people with credentials and a sincere interest. (It's not like they were offering a huge chunk of change to write for their site either.)
But it's important to remember: Not everyone gets a job because they are actually good at it.
And it's also worth acknowledging and appreciating those good editors out there: They are worth their weight in gold.
...Is a really interesting observation. I'm definitely not well versed in the journalistic side of writing, so I can't really speak to it. I definitely think that the immediacy of data transmission and the ease of blog/article publication has changed the world of journalism... not for the better!
