“Winter's Grasp”
Written: December 17th, 2008

A spark is struck, in vain it would seem;
As the chill gusts of Winter whisk it away into the darkness.
Again and again, you strike flint against steel,
In the hopes of banishing the harsh and unforgiving grasp of Winter's hand.
At last, a flame! It leaps up from the brush,
And the small, dancing flicker of orange and yellow brings heat and light to the night.
Blast! Seemingly in outrage, Winter's wind blows with astounding resolve,
Dispelling your momentary comfort.
Unwilling to falter, unwilling to fail, you gather kindling from the ground beneath your feet
And set to once again: striking flint against steel.
A shout, in triumph! The fire has come! The logs catch, and begin to burn!
The darkness vanishes, to be replaced by the flickering glow,
Proof of the success of your hard work.
The heat is invigorating; it brings feeling once more to your hands,
And you laugh at the joy of your accomplishment.
Winter, enraged by your victory, vanity prevailing, brings forth a mighty snow.
Yet, the heat of your fire proves a worthy match,
Standing up to the tiny crystals of frozen water.
The wind howls, a violent tempest that stands testament to Winter's fury,
Chilling you to the very bone.
But your fire protects you, warms you, and at last you fall asleep in its good grace.
Slowly, but surely, the fire falters, and once again succumbs to Winter's might.
Darkness consumes the light,
Cold consumes the heat,
And you find yourself once again enthralled by Winter's menacing grasp.
