I just finished the book Moneyball by Michael Lewis. In the book Lewis tracks the fiscal policies of the Oakland Athletic's general manager, Billy Beane. Lewis wants to find out how the Athletics who sport a $40 million payroll compete with the New York Yankees who routinely trot out a lineup with a payroll well over $100 million. With the Yankees signing big ticket free agent pitchers C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett along with slugger Mark Texiera, Moneyball has become relevant again. By adding these contracts to their already mammoth payroll, the Yankees now boast an all time high payroll of $207 million. After the Yankees the next highest payroll belongs to the New York Mets at $137 million. The bottom three teams consist of the Oakland Athletics ($47 million), the Tampay Bay Rays ($43 million), and the Florida Marlins ($22 million). How are these teams expected to compete with the Yankees?
The Yankees excessive spending will ultimately bring the end to Major League Baseball. A huge disparity obviously already exsists. The Yankees have one player, star 3rd baseman Alex Rodriguez, who will make $28 million. That is more than the entire Florida Marlins roster! Now comes the crazy part the Marilins have one a World Series championship more recently than the Yankees. Last year the Tampa Bay Rays went to the World Series with their lowly payroll. Despite their luxurious spending sprees, the Yankees have not delivered a World Series championship to their fans since the year 2000. The sad part comes in the offseason. The Yankees routinely plunder the poorer teams for the talent the paupers have developed. Take last year for example. The Rays caught lightning in a bottle. They had a group of young studs come up through their farm system and realize their talent at the same time. Every baseball fan knows none of those players will still be with Rays come three years from now. The Rays will not be able to afford them. The big-wigs, led by the Yankees, will come and offer the young players more money than they ever dreamed about. The Rays will lose the young talent that they put all the hours into scouting and developing. This phenomenon will eventually ruin baseball. The sport is quickly turning into a game of the haves and the have nots. The annual offseason plunder of the poor teams create a situation where the poorer teams are pretty much serving as a farm system for the big boys. This creates an extreme competitve disparity. Eventually fans will realize that teams spending under $50 million cannot compete with teams spending over $100 million, or in the Yankees case $200 million. Eventually Major League Baseball will have to bite the bullet and create a salary cap, otherwise America's pasttime will slowly continue to crumble away. Now some might argue all of this is faulty because small market teams have found success against the Yankees. I argue why should the Yankees be able to sit back, bully, and snatch away the developed talent of small market teams. Think about how great it would be to see stars play their whole career with the teams that found them, rather than playing through their rookie contract and then running for the money in New York, Boston, Chicago, or Los Angeles. A salary cap will bring back a loyalty and integrity that has gone missing in the era of free agency.
