I love my TV. I've had channels 2, 4, 5, and 8 for the past 12 years and many of you know that those are ABC, NBC, CBS, and NPT (national public television). And here today, I have the 185 channel package from DirecTV and my mind is somewhat spinning. So many channels, so.. little that's actually worth watching? Don't get me wrong, I love having more than 4 channels and it's great not having to sit and watch the news, Law and Order, and all the other shows that come on those three national networks.
Unfortunately, some of the channels were blocked by my parents, although they didn't really block anything I was going to miss watching. MTV these days is just a bunch of crap, half-naked women showing off their butts to anyone who wants to look, rappers talking about drugs, guns, rims, sex, money, and b*&^hes. I'm not too interested in the music videos because they're usually repetitive, especially hip-hop. They're usually a combination of any of the things I listed a second ago.
The news these days is full of celebrities that nobody really cares about (*cough*Paris*cough*) and I find myself wondering very often when these people disgrace my television with their presence, "Why are you on my TV? Get off." Like the scandal with Michael Jackson a few years ago. I know he was accused of molesting a little kid and I don't know if he actually did it or not, but you know what..? Any parent who is stupid enough to let their child go on the road or have a "sleepover" with a grown man deserves to wear a big fat dunce cap for the rest of their life. It's just retarded to let the kid do that, no matter how much they might want to, it's just not a good idea! And who's to say Jackson wasn't set up in the first place? He's got a ton of money and everybody knows it... easy target. The evidence points to the fact that he did do it, but it's not exactly uncommon for police to plant things on someone they want to catch "red-handed". One cop in particular had it out for my dad (God rest his soul) and it almost took place (according to my mom, who was there and pregnant with me at the time), so if you think that police planting evidence is just something that happens in big cities and in cop shows, think again.
And I know everyone's talking about (or was talking about) Paris Hilton going to jail, but you know, I think it's pretty funny. She actually has to show some responsibility for her actions. She didn't know she wasn't supposed to be driving? RIGHT. Nobody really believes that and the show that her mom put on in the court room was just laughable. I'm sure even Paris was sitting there thinking, "Mom.. you're not helping."
Let's face it: for those of you who live in the United States, we live in a media driven nation. The media decides what's important enough to report on their news stations and they tend to ignore what people really want to hear about. It's unfortunate that the news is flooded with celebrity fodder like Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Michael Jackson, and their respective new and outrageous scandals. I'm kind of tired of hearing about them and their crap, to be quite honest. I have enough of my own crap to worry about without having to hear about Paris Hilton whining about having to follow the law just like everyone else. She claims she was singled out because of her celebrity status? OF COURSE she was! Princess Hilton was singled out because she (and the rest of her family) thinks that she is above the law. She thinks that she is untouchable and she shows it every time she goes anywhere and I thank God that someone finally decided to bring her back down to earth. She'll be happy to go back to "The Simple Life" after she's done spending her days in jail. But, what pisses me off about this is that she's being separated from the other prisoners! But, maybe this is reasonable. They might actually eat her for breakfast. I guess the jail has to cover their rear ends, though. They can't exactly let anything happen to Princess Hilton while she's in their "care". Oh, well.
I know I'm just adding to the problem of people not shutting up about things that most people just don't care about, but I guess I have to look at it like this: I might not care about Paris Hilton and her problems, but when she gets treated like she's special when it comes to the law, I get upset.
At least I have the ability to watch something besides the news now and can divert my attention to more worthwhile programming. Like how to make homemade ice cream on Food Network. :-) Sorry, Paris, but you come in much less than second to homemade ice cream directions. :-p
Rise from the ashes, young phoenix, and go find out how easy it is to pirate every single channel off of satellite. Then you can really get your brain spun and your mom'll be kept spinning for an entire afternoon blocking channels. They even have a channel that you can't see UNLESS your pirating satellite...where they say they know your a pirate and they will find you, etc.. Hilarious. But don't worry, they can't.
But how's this for a mindbender: I don't even have a TV! I haven't now for nearly a year and I can't relate to anything your talking about. Your entire rant about lousy programming is completely meaningless to me.
Rise from the ashes, indeed.
I agree: Paris Hilton, Brangalina, Tom & Katy-who cares? Anybody can see that their lives are boring and self-centered as their photo-op moments assualt our eyes and sensibilities while we're waiting to see what kind of clothes we need to put on first thing in the morning on the 11 o'clock weather report. The "celebrity politicians" are pretty bad, too. As much as I like to hear Barbra Streisand sing and as much as I agree with her political views, it's a real turn-off when she seems to think that her particular point of view should influence public policy. How grandiose is that? She has been accused for having a big ego from the get-go. Some of the most worthwhile television journalism I have seen
is of the investigative kind, where the reporter exposes people who have taken advantage of the unsuspecting or elderly or who are offering unsafe products(such as some pharmaceuticals)or services. Whistle-blowing is good and necessary. It's a kind of "checks and balances" for the well-being of the general public to make unscrupulous people and companies who seem to think they're above the law shape up, or better yet, be fined or go to jail. Let's hear it for the liberal media!
I sometimes wonder why Paris Hilton is covered so much by the media in such positive terms. They will often post up polls that say things like "Will Paris be MORE POPULAR once she gets out of jail?"
MORE POPULAR? She's not popular. I don't know anyone who likes her. She's a figment of the media's imagination and just some sort of bizarre filler they include for their own amusement or something.
Not all the media buys into it - I love that Anderson Cooper refuses to speak her name on the air. At least SOMEONE in the media has some freakin' integrity.
