A Dangerous Mind: Adverse to Advertising

Okay, I have a problem and I admit it. It's a problem that sets me at odds with the current mindset of America, as well as my own financial well being.

It's advertising. Yep, that ubiquitous, inescapable, lying heartbeat of capitalism, advertising.

If advertising only did what it was originally designed for, to present a product of service of value, I’d have less trouble with it.

But the fact is, almost all advertising is targeted at our subconscious minds, our emotional brains. And those programs that make us all ache to fill a false void by consuming, are what is making our society insane.

We are constantly bombarded with words, images, and sounds directed at overriding our free will. Most contemporary ads grab hold of our emotions, and manipulate them mercilessly to achieve a not-so-hidden agenda. You know, to feed somebody's greed.

We all consciously know how little truth is contained in those messages. But our thinking minds are bypassed. We are helpless to stop the commanding impulses thrust upon us. We get lost in a sea of lies implanted deep inside.

The more difficult it is to recognize and act on truth, the harder it is to live a sane life. Politicians know this, and sell themselves as products by hitting our fear buttons. We end up with shabby, corrupt, hypocritical leaders, and wonder how it happened.

There are now so many lies and scams and spins in our society, that we get overwhelmed and give up trying to find the even a nub of truth. That's exactly the mindset big business and their politicians want us to adopt. When overwhelmed and confused, the implanted impulses automatically take over. That's how the program works.

We all know why it works, don't we? To sell us what we really don't need. And after we act on the impulse and buy, we feel empty again. Then what? The next impulse takes over, and it's ring around the rosey all over again.

I love my free will. Next to life itself, it may be God's greatest gift. While I do everything I can top keep my free will alive, it takes constant awareness. That in itself is tiring.

Don't get me wrong. I like living in this world, with all its twists, turns, and spins. But I don’t like inviting more unwanted stuff into my already wary mind.

What's a human to do?

Oh well... I'll stay as conscious as I can. It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it.

And yes, I know. There is advertising on this very page.

Maybe I really do need to lose those fifteen pounds this month. As long as it isn't fifteen pounds of grey matter.

Ads

My family yells at me because I mute all commercials. There are very few I care to listen to. If I cannot hear it, it cannot implant itself in my subconscience. I totally get where you're going with that. I fight my fight against modern day advertising.

When choosing the ads for my blogs, I took into consideration the ads that I see that tick me off.. and even though I did choose a few ads that I would not click on, at least they're not offensive to the intellect.

I'm numb to it

stephanie's picture

I see what you are saying but I'm just very numb to most advertising and it doesn't really sway me...and sometimes it even has the opposite effect than intended. For example, I'm a woman and I need underwear, but those Victoria's Secret ads actually turn me off...I have absolutely no interest in going to Victoria's Secret now, because they actually market to men and not women. So they lost my business due to their advertising.

Mind Numbing

AryeDirect's picture

Numbing the conscious mind is one of the goals of psychology driven advertising. When our consciousness is overloaded, our subconscious is more susceptible to the program.

In another posting, Finding Inner Peace with EFT suggests a way to clear out triggered emotions that cause stress. Many of those emotions are provoked by the hidden persuaders advertising implants in all of us.

We have all become use to the bombardment, we no longer pay conscious attention to it. That is exactly the state advertisers want to engender.

I'm not numb to the point of being subconsciously programmed

There's absolutely no amount of advertising that will make me go buy Coca-cola. I just don't like it. So I totally disagree with you that my being "numb" to a lot of advertising means that conversely I'm more susceptible.

I don't buy designer clothes, I use Colgate Total toothpaste only because my dentist recommends it for gingivitis, and I am not running to my doctor to go get a pill to cure the latest three or four letter malady (PMS/IED/RLS,ADD,ADHD, etc.)

I'm not saying other people aren't being swayed - obviously advertising works. But not all of us fall prey to it. I am not much of a consumer at all. I hardly spend money on anything except for things like yoga classes or training. I get a lot of my clothes at thrift shops, because it's cheap and I enjoy bargain-hunting.

I don't discount the effect of media (not just advertising) on people. But my point is, conscious people can look critically at these things and not be automatically suckered in. Ultimately, you are in control of your own brain.

Stephanie

I'm agreeing with you...

I drink coke because it's my favorite - but I usually drink water. I hate pepsi and no amount of advertising is going to convince me it tastes good..lol.

I don't buy designer clothes because I'm poor and don't understand the point - oh.. except that I will pay more for quality - just not a "name."

I use colgate total because a friend turned me on to it and it is the best toothpaste in the world! I am a huge huge fan of colgate total!!

When I first saw a commercial for RLS, I laughed my head off.. but now I'm more concerned.. as you said.. obviously advertising works.. so these poor people who are buying into needing a drug for something that really is a possible symptom for something else.. such as taking too much medication can cause jitters!

Promoting Greater Awareness

AryeDirect's picture

You are showing awareness in your choices, bravo. Exactly what I am writing about to spark more of.

It takes a courage to, at least in part, be beyond the overwhelming tide toward unconsciousness in our society.

I suspect your life is richer because of your consciousness.

But I can only speak for myself.

Mine is.
